The Story of Church Without Limits:
While serving as a youth pastor at a church in North Toronto, Pastor Brendan Witton began to sense a strong calling to reach out to young people in the Ajax/Pickering area. In February 2000 he and a small team of volunteers launched an outreach Bible study on Thursday evenings in the back of a motorcycle shop owned by a friend. God's blessing was evident and within several months as many as 35 young people were packing into the shop to hang out, pray and learn more about the Word of God.
By May of that year the meeting had outgrown its location and moved into a local church, becoming the Church St. Youth Centre. The Thursday night outreaches continued and many youth heard the gospel and numbers of them accepted Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior.
It was during this time that God began speaking to Pastor Brendan about taking the outreach a step further and actually starting a church. At first he was hesitant to obey. There seemed to be so many reasons not to do it (e.g. he was too young, others would misunderstand his motives) and they didn't have any financial backing. After much prayer and consideration, Pastor Brendan became confident that this was God's will and began to set things in motion. With a strong goal of reaching the unsaved and the younger generation, it was decided that services were going to be held on Saturday evenings, and the dress code would be relaxed. Equipment was purchased, leadership was organized and on November 11, 2000 Church Without Limits was officially born.
In July of 2001 the Saturday services moved to St. Paul's on the Hill Anglican Church in Pickering. In October 2005 a Friday service was added in the Don Mills/Sheppard area of the city of Toronto and the purpose of the second service was to better serve CWL members in the city and to reach more people. In addition to the weekly services, a strong network of small groups was developed to encourage evangelism, discipleship, and foster relationships. Focused weekend retreats and a training school was also implemented to aid in the spiritual and personal growth of each member.
In April 2005 the pastoral leadership team of CWL was truly completed as Pastor Brendan married Pastor Sharon Joy. As our pastors grew and matured, the church followed in their footsteps and began to reach a more diverse group of people. Many of the young people reached in the early days began to get married, and start families.
After several years of meeting both in Pickering and Toronto, the leadership team sensed God calling Church Without Limits to merge the two locations into one. In July 2010, both services were united and moved to Stephen Leacock C.I. in Scarborough. CWL started meeting on Sunday mornings for the first time. In January 2013 services there was another move as services transitioned to the Academic Resource Centre at the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus.
In June of that same year, the leadership of Toronto City Church, another church in the city of Toronto approached CWL regarding joining the two congregations into one and asked Pastors Brendan and Sharon to become Lead Pastors. After much prayer, counsel and discussion the leadership of CWL unanimously decided to move forward and on July 21st, 2013 Church Without Limits was joined with Toronto City Church moving forward under the TCC name.
We are thankful for what God did through Church Without Limits over the years and we are excited about carrying the same heart spirit forward as Toronto City Church: A Church Without Limits!
